What is a 365 Art Prompt book for Inktober

365-day art prompt books help artists to pick subjects for challenges that span an entire year or for a curated period of time such as Inktober. Every year artists participate in Jake Parker’s month-long art challenge to draw every day of October. Inktober is a sort of reset for artists, and it was designed to get artists in the habit of creating art every day. However, if you’re like me, I don’t draw ghouls and pumpkin heads. I love to paint plants instead of characters and my 365 day art prompt book is just in time for inktober. Every Inktober I’m scrambling to figure out what I’m going to draw or paint. This year I created something that would help me to stay on track, and give me creative ideas so I can paint every day of October.

Best part about art prompt books

The best part about this little art prompt book is that you can flip through it at random and pick a subject. The book has sections for tropicals, succulents, and flowers. You can pick any subject and work through the book however you’d like. I’ve listed below a few ways to use the book that you may not have thought of.

  1. Just on deciding art subjects

  2. Sketching initial compositions in the book, before you paint or draw the actual art somewhere else

  3. Inking inside the book.

  4. Keeping track of flowers you have already painted (that’s if you’re doing a year long challenge after Inktober)

The 365 prompt botanical book focuses just on plants. I thought of this book for multiple reasons. It might be a great resources for anyone who studying botanical art. They can keep track of information relating to plants. They can do initial sketches of plants they want to study. This little botanical book can be used in so many different ways I thought it was worth outline.

You can use the book and ink directly inside of it. However, I really felt this book was best used as a guide to picking subjects. Since each page has a different plant name, you can pick a plant and do an initial sketch. I’m a surface pattern designer, so I am going to use the book to pick subjects on days I lack inspiration, and then sketch out a simple pattern idea in the book. I’ll transfer the idea to watercolor paper or digitally scan the sketch and create a pattern on my iPad. The book will save me time picking out ideas, and it will also help me to remember floral subjects I have already created.

  1. Flip through the book at random

  2. Start from the beginning and work to the back

  3. Start at the end and work backwards

  4. Work through a section of the book

What I love about this book is that you can keep track of the flowers or botanical subjects you have already finished. You don’t even have to draw them right in the book. There is a lot of flexibility in how you can use this book. I’m excited to take it for a test drive this Inktober. If you’d like to see what I create, just follow me on Instagram or join my email list. I’ll be emailing pictures of what I create for Inktober.

If you’d like to purchase it, the book went live on Amazon Labor Day weekend. You can find it here.
